Paraffin and its amazing uses

Paraffin is one of the special chemical compounds that has many fans in all industrial and non-industrial sectors due to its diversity and different applications. A colorless and odorless substance that is a derivative of petroleum and is available in the market in jelly and solid form according to the application expected from it. But what is paraffin? It is a hydrocarbon compound that is obtained from oil or coal in the petrochemical industry. In this compound, all carbon atoms are connected to each other.

This compound was discovered in the 19th century by a German scientist named Karl von Reichenbach. While trying to find a way to purify oil compounds in the petrochemical industry, he extracted this substance, and then in the 20th century, this compound entered the candle-making and packaging industries and even the production of industrial oils. The chemical formula of paraffin is CnH2n+2. This material is available in liquid and solid forms, the liquid form of which is used in industry, and the solid form is widely used in candle making.

Types of paraffin

1- Solid paraffin

About 3 to 5 percent of the ingredients of solid paraffin are oils. This substance melts at a temperature between 58 and 60 degrees Celsius and freezes at 55 degrees Celsius, which is why it is most often seen in solid form. Solid paraffin is divided into three parts:

Healthy paraffin

The purity of this sample of compounds is higher than other types. The method of producing this particular type is by using changes that are made to oil through a chemical process. The paraffin obtained in this case has a lot of oil in such a way that its color tends to brown. After extracting this compound from oil, degreasing is performed in another step to obtain a clearer color and a purer composition.

This sample of paraffin is also used in the food and beverage industry. For longer shelf life of fruits and vegetables, adding this compound to them helps them last longer. It is also widely used as a laxative. This product is also used to produce various moisturizing and softening creams and paraffin hair oil.

Industrial paraffin

This example of the compound is available in both solid and liquid forms. The liquid form is used for use in the textile and spinning industries and is a lubricant for food industry machinery. Solid paraffins are generally lubricants.

Edible paraffin

This example of the product is a refined non-vegetable oil that looks similar to other oils and the reason for its use is the high heat tolerance that this compound has. Since this product is not absorbed in the body, its use in the food industry has decreased. Be careful when using this product and avoid excessive and prolonged use because it prevents the absorption of vitamins such as A, D, K, and E. The uses of this example of the compound include the following:

  • Polishing fruits and vegetables and producing chocolate
  • Laxative for children

This medicine is not recommended for children under 6 years of age.

  • Use as animal feed

Like us humans, animals and livestock also need to take medicine sometimes to solve their problems. By using this compound, we can solve the intestinal problems of animals and livestock. With the prescription of a veterinarian and according to the problem, we can use the appropriate doses for treatment.

2- Liquid paraffin

This sample of paraffin is white and transparent. It boils at 175 degrees Celsius and evaporates at 265 degrees Celsius. This product is used in the matchmaking, candle making, battery making and cable making industries. We can also mention the applications of this liquid sample in things like the production of adhesives, fabrics, and industrial papers.

What is liquid paraffin?

This compound does not have a specific formula due to its mixture of saturated hydrocarbons in its structure and is generally represented by the formula CnH2n+2. In the solid state, it is a waxy, white particle, but in the liquid state, it is a colorless, odorless, and tasteless liquid, and due to its hydrocarbon structure, it is present in the form of oil. These compounds are the main components of oil and natural gas. Those with less than 5 carbon atoms per molecule are usually gases at room temperature, while those with between 5 and 15 carbon atoms are usually liquids. Straight-chain types with more than 15 carbon atoms per molecule are solids at room temperature. These compounds also have higher stability than olefins.

Production Method of Liquid Paraffin

The raw material of this compound, slaked wax, is a mixture of oil and wax and a by-product of refining lubricating oil. First, the oil is separated from the slaked wax (deoiling or dewaxing) and separated by crystallization. Generally, the slaked wax is heated, mixed with a solvent such as a ketone, and then cooled. The wax is then crystallized from the solution, leaving the remaining oil before being filtered in two forms:

  • Solid – wax plus some solvent
  • Liquid – oil and solvent

The product wax may be further refined to remove any color and odor. It is then blended to achieve the desired products with specific properties such as penetration and melting point. Paraffin wax is then supplied in liquid or solid form.

Applications of liquid paraffin

The main use of liquid paraffin is in the medical and pharmaceutical industries and in the production of cosmetic and health products. We will examine these uses of this substance in the following.

Medicine

This compound is used as a laxative and lubricant in children and is one of the effective treatments for treating constipation and encopresis. Symptoms such as abdominal problems, bloating, diarrhea, etc. are not related to this drug and the function of this substance is different from osmotic laxatives.

In general, this medicine acts as an oily layer covering the intestines and treating constipation. It is also effective in treating hemorrhoid problems and pain.

Cosmetics

In cosmetic products, this compound is used as a natural emollient. Because it has a low melting point, it is applied to the hands and feet, which is known as paraffin therapy for hands and feet. It causes gentle heat to be transferred to the skin and increases blood flow in that area. It also acts as a natural emollient and softens the skin. This substance is used in many beauty salons.

Paraffin is used in many beauty products because it is inexpensive. Paraffin is a good product for the skin and increases its moisture; it also continues to increase moisture levels after the treatment is completed. It also helps open pores and remove dead skin cells, making the skin look fresher and smoother. It also has a long history of treating many physical ailments such as arthritis and increasing blood flow.
