Normal hexane (n-Hexane) is a linear saturated hydrocarbon with the chemical formula C₆H₁₄ that is classified as an alkane. This substance is known as a colorless, volatile, flammable liquid with a petroleum-like odor. Due to its non-polarity, normal hexane is well soluble in many organic compounds, but is insoluble in water.

Normal hexane is one of the main compounds found in light petroleum cuts and is usually extracted from naphtha during the distillation or isomerization process. It is used as a widely used industrial solvent in various industries such as edible oil extraction, adhesives, paints and thinners, industrial cleaners, and rubber product manufacturing.

Normal hexane is the direct isomer of a 6-carbon alkane in terms of molecular structure and differs from isomers such as 2-methylpentane or 3-methylpentane. It is usually marketed as a mixture of isomers, but normal (linear) grade is preferred in more sensitive applications due to its higher purity and more uniform behavior.

Normal hexane or n-hexane was identified through the efforts of French chemist Charles François de Maricourt, who extracted it from crude oil and named it “hexane” and determined the chemical structure of n-hexane, showing that hexane is a saturated aliphatic hydrocarbon with a straight chain.
Hexane, with a POM of 8058 and a molecular weight of 86.18g/mol, is a colorless liquid with a faint petroleum odor and is toxic and is considered an aliphatic hydrocarbon.

Applications of Normal Hexane: From Pharmaceuticals to Paints and Resins

1. Oil extraction and food industries

Production Method:

Normal hexane is obtained mainly by refining edible oils. The exact composition of the distillate depends on the source of the oil (crude or refined) and the method of refining. The industrial product (which usually contains 50% by weight of the straight-chain isomer) has a boiling point of 65 to 70 °C.

Other Preparation Methods:

Although hexane is useful in the laboratory as an extraction solvent, it is generally difficult to sell outside of laboratory applications. In any case, normal hexane can be separated from many sources such as diesel, camping fuel and many solvent hydrocarbons. The general process for separating this material from solvent sources is fractional distillation at a temperature of 65 to 70 ° C. This is done by oxidation of the by-product under an oxidizing environment such as alcohols, alkenes and toluene. Preparation of high purity normal hexane from raffinate recycling by absorption and distillation process:

In the absorption separation process, zeolite 5A is used for absorption. The raffinate contains 24.24% normal hexane. It is first absorbed in the rich raffinate oil in abnormal paraffin and then is rejected in the rich oil in normal paraffin. Under certain operating conditions, the concentration of n-hexane in the rich oil reaches more than 96%. The concentrations of 3-methylpentane and methylcyclopentane, which are the key light and heavy components in the normal hexane distillation tower, are reduced to 0.15 and 0.07, respectively. According to a simulation method, in a tower consisting of 15 stages, the concentration of normal hexane can reach 99.02% with a reflux ratio of 7.5. The combined process includes both absorption and distillation processes. This process has a very high efficiency compared to the previous traditional distillation processes for producing high purity normal hexane.

Process Considerations:

The boiling point of 3-methylpentane is 63.3°C and that of methylcyclopentane is 71.8°C. This temperature is very close to the boiling point of normal hexane, 68.7°C. Due to the closeness of the boiling point, a large number of plates are required to produce high purity hexane, and in this case, energy consumption is high. In the case of using two distillation columns with 90 float valve plates, the purity of normal hexane is less than 75%. It is estimated that 5 nanometers of steam are required to produce 1 ton of normal hexane in two boilers in the thermal integral method.

To reduce the cost of producing normal hexane, it is necessary to ensure the volatility difference between the key light and heavy components in the raffinate mixture.

Normal hexane is mainly available in two grades in the Iranian market: industrial and food (polymeric). Food grade has a purity higher than 99% and very low levels of aromatic compounds (such as benzene) and is produced in accordance with strict standards for food and polymer uses.
